An element of surprise awaits you as you enter the garden. Tucked behind a roadside hedge on the main road of Rotherham, it opens out to sweeping rural views across farmland to the ever-changing Leslie Hills—where the view is different every day, from glowing sunsets to distant snowy peaks.

Established in 1998, the garden has been carved into the landscape across four terraced levels, with stone walls and steps creating structure and flow. The upper terraces face the full force of the North Canterbury nor’wester, while the lower levels are sheltered by established hedges, creating a contrast between exposed and protected spaces.

This interplay has shaped the garden over time. Through careful selection and experience, plantings have evolved to withstand dry summers, strong winds, and cold winters. The result is a resilient garden full of texture, contrast, and seasonal interest.

In spring, established rhododendrons burst into bloom, complemented by thoughtful plantings of perennials and hardy varieties chosen not just to survive, but to thrive in these conditions.

Each terrace offers something different—open and exposed areas, sheltered corners, productive vegetable and fruit gardens, and a mix of trees, shrubs, and structured hedging. A charming vintage-style she shed adds a focal point, while touches of whimsy are scattered throughout the garden, inviting moments of delight and discovery at every turn.
